ARTICLE: Red hair don’t care

Petticoat Diva

I’ve had a red hair for over 3 years and people wonder how I keep it so vibrant but one of the main things that people don’t really is that I, for the most part, do it myself; and yes my bathroom hates me. The main thing that people don’t realise is that a routine of doing my hair every 1 to 2 weeks is a thing.  It doesn’t take long but it is a faff and I’ve not got into the habit.

The other thing people think is “I can’t believe you’re bleaching your hair so much”,  I’m not bleaching my hair. I bleach my hair perhaps every 6-8 months. One of the key things that I wanted to make sure with going red, is that I didn’t have a grow-out line. My hairdresser purposefully makes my hair look the way it does with brown roots. The technique he uses is a balayage, and you see it a lot more on blondes than you do with alternative colours.   A balayage is basically an uneven line of where my hair stops being brown and begins being red.

Hair post bleach before toner / hair colour.

I’ve been encouraged so many times to go fully red head but since I’ve just recently added in my fringe, I think that’s the reddest I will go. The main reason for having a balayage is that my hair can continue to grow out in brown and the red just moves down my hair. So the fresh hair isn’t constantly being bleached. It’s bleached once and then I use toner.  I need a hair colour that was easy to maintain, I’m not very good at styling my hair nor doing fancy things and I also didn’t want to be in the hairdressers every few weeks with foil in my hair because I simply don’t have the time.  I needed to look fabulous at all times.

There are several toners you can use that are perfectly acceptable to use on top of bleach.  The main ones I’ve heard of are:

  • Renbow Crazy Color
  • Arctic Fox
  • Directions
  • Manic Panic
  • Stargazer
  • Paintbox

Directions Postbox Red turns Pink on my hair

I use Renbow Crazy Color myself – the Vermillion Red, Fire and Violette over the last 3 and half years but now religious have been with Vermillion for nearly 2 years because I love the post box red that I acchieve.  The Fire albeit it red, has more orange tones and as for Violette, that was a crazy month of being purple! It didn’t last long as I felt really pale with it but my friends say I should go back. Another of my friends wants to me dye my hair several colours but I genuinely don’t think I have the energy to keep doing various colours.

My red takes 10 minutes to put on and I leave it on anywhere between 20 and 50 minutes although Renbow advises 30 – it depends how much time I’ve got. The biggest issue about toner is that it stains…. my god does it!   My bathroom is light as well and if you have white in between your titles, prepare the Domestos because your bathroom will never be the same again. When I moved into my flat in London, I was very excited to find out that the shower was grey between the tiles and much easier to clean.

So yeah I have red hair and it makes me stick out but I love it.  I go through stages of thinking I should just go back to being brunette as its much less upkeep but I don’t think anyone would recognise me anymore.  I go to events and people are specifically looking for my red hair and get most confused if they can’t find me.

What colour hair do you have or would you love to have?  Have you ever been a wild child and changed your hair colour and thought it was a mistake? Have you ever wrecked your bathroom badly? I’d love to hear your stories.

I had caramel blonde Ombré before I went to be a red head.
